Many of you may already be familiar with Barbara's participation on Christian Homeschool Fellowship on the Web, or chfweb.com. Barbara posts under the username of "BWSmith" and is affectionately known as "Our Own Barbara". Here are some of the special messages that Barbara has shared on chfweb.com.

"Why I Should Not Homeschool"
"I began asking those women, who had formerly been the butt of some of my jokes, why I should not homeschool Don't tell me why I should; tell me I shouldn't."
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Using Ovens as Dishwashers"
"A masterful-looking chef greeted the television viewers, welcoming us to a revolutionary new way of using kitchen equipment. Previous cooking programs have perpetuated provincial culinary prejudices that locked us into a one-dimensional approach to efficient use of modern kitchen equipment."
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Becoming a Woman of Prayer"
"God has shown us what HE wants HIS women to be like, so he carefully recorded information about many women for a reason. They were not perfect they had problems they struggled with unbelief but they obeyed at a critical point in their walk with God and HE blessed them."
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Allowing Emotions to Rule the Day"
"'Is there anybody else out there who has the problem of allowing emotions to rule her day?!' With a BIG wink I could reply -- 'Oh, no! Why here on the CHF board we ALWAYS have it together!'"
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Discouraged and Feeling Alone"
"Yes -- it gets better, -- on some days it's downright WONDERFUL -- *but* setbacks, disappointments, frustrations and negative comments are part of the homeschool landscape. We always have a choice: whose approval counts?"
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"I just made a pot of coffee. Ya wanna drop by?"
"No mother of a teenage boy or girl who reads this board does not relate to your sorrow. You are not alone! I just made a pot of coffee. Ya wanna drop by?"
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Blessings or Lack Of?"
"Setting the example of contentment in our own circumstances can help our daughters learn to appreciate God's dispensations of provisions in HIS children's lives. Sometimes our children have heard us complain about what we don't have and have learned to look for satisfaction in money or possessions."
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Literature & Christians"
"Again, and again, I say: praying about what lessons God wants us to present to our children -- and when -- is important. Asking God specific questions about novels is OK! Presenting all our material in such a way as to direct our kids to consider what they are learning about the LORD is important."
Uploaded November 22, 1998

"Damage by 'Sheltering'"
"Hmmmmmm. Sheltering is "doing damage?" Then why does our country pour money into *sheltering* homeless people from the realities of the street? Why do we build tornado *shelters* ? Because we KNOW the "storms" of life are hard, even life threatening."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Teenage Rebellion ... My Heart Goes Out To You!"
"My heart goes out to you and to your daughter! May God quickly bring her to repentance and reconciliation. I don't know what you mean by total rebellion has she left your home or is she fighting within the confines of your authority?"
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"In the Midst of the Blackness"
"Depression. It is real God knows about depression and ofttimes HE has allowed the black clouds. In the midst of the blackness, HE is still shining - but HE wants us to see what is in our hearts and minds."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Happy Friday!"
"It was just a matter of time before it happened. For more than seven years I have had a simple refrain I rehearsed each time I queried about homeschooling: "If God calls you to it, He will enable and provide. He will not fail. The foundation of a good education is a submitted heart; a child who is hard hearted will just become a well-informed heathen.""
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"An Angry Tailspin"
"I thought about this post for awhile and I grieve for you and with you. I didn't smash a chocolate cake in anyone's face but when I was in an angry tailspin I have done plenty that embarrassed me and saddened the Lord Jesus Christ."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Through the Peaks and Valleys (or should I say freezers and furnaces?)"
"Wow -- was it flabbergasting to read your header! Quickly, let me turn you over to our Father who loves you & knows you better than I. And let me give you a BIG hug and some comfort right now, because I have been through the peaks and valleys (or should I say freezers and furnaces?) of menopause."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Any Practical Advice on Controlling My Anger"
"Controlling *my* anger has become easier in the sense that God has shown me some "triggers." When I have learned what God's word says about anger this knowledge has shamed me, but strengthened me and no, I haven't mastered the emotional outbursts but when I submit, He triumphs ..."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Experiencing God"
"I never linked "pride" as a descriptive adjective to moi -- oh no, inferiority complex QUEEN that I was -- Well what is an inferiority complex -- but a SUPERIORITY complex inside out?"
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"What Is a Titus 2 Woman?"
"You ask what a Titus 2 woman is? I think she is the personification of how Eve, the first woman who was created in the image of God. So too, the Proverbs 31 woman lived out her faith in her Creator and Redeemer; so did Elizabeth, and Mary, the mother of Lord, Jesus Christ."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Issues in Prayer"
"I have been thinking about some things -- particularly about the seriousness of my prayer life so I pass along some stuff and I hope as the Lord is teaching ME to let go, you will be encouraged by these thoughts. A major issue for women is fretting being fearful being "concerned." We are very, very good at that, aren't we? Do you know some promises from Scripture to inform your prayers and "reform" your fretting?"
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Here's a little encouragement from my ancient pal Isaiah"
"Here's a little encouragement -- and a cyber hug from my ancient pal Isaiah: (Isa 40:27-31) "Your way is not hidden from the Lord! It is the enemy who is telling you how tough things are -- and there is just enough truth in what he says to tickle your ears -- (I KNOW from personal experience, my friend, I KNOW!)"
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Agitation"
"You called your experience "agitation." And yes, I know what you are describing to my shame, I do. To HIS praise, Christ is healing me and changing me."
Uploaded November 18, 1998

"Praying to become a Proverbs 31"
"Father, make me an excellent wife even if you give me no earthly husband. Let me remember I am your bride, Lord Jesus. Help me to understand my worth in your sight. (31:10)"
Uploaded August 12, 1998

"Re-Vamping Our Summer Wardrobe"
"My husband Doug and I were great "fretters" when we became Christians. He fretted about politics, money and the future; I fretted about the family, housework and the past. We brought these old habits into our new Christian lives."
Uploaded August 12, 1998

"Prayer for Submission ...
husband wants to stop homeschooling"

"I ask God right now for His indwelling Holy Spirit to calm you and comfort you. That HE bring you together with your husband so that you HEAR his concerns and that you both will listen to each other after listening to the LORD."
Uploaded August 12, 1998

"Logs In Our Own Eyes"
Barbara posted this prayer -- believing that God will give us victory -- in response to the question ..."I am judgmental and critical. How do I change?"
Uploaded August 12, 1998

"Without Christ, we ALL are bad!"
Barbara posted this reply in a thread titled, "Teenagers are always bad????". Barbara writes, "The worst moments in my life have been hearing my children say 'stuff' they learned from me!"
Uploaded August 12, 1998

"Stress"
"Stress, invisible and deadly, frequently camps out at my house and sabotages many promising learning opportunities. Worse, it devastates my emotional and physical health, and stunts my daily spiritual growth. Recognizing when I am entertaining this unpleasant visitor is easy; my family quickly detects it."

"Take All the Time You Need, But Hurry Up!"
"One crisp September morning, many years ago, I snapped a picture of our son going off to second grade. He is perching on our porch scrubbed and grinning. As I relived this "Kodak" moment, a familiar sad feeling flooded my heart."

"To the Parents of Children Who Are Challenges . . ."
"Homeschooling opens many doors for willing students, but homeschooling will not magically unlock a child's heart or mind who is determined to do according to his or her own will. Even a wee child may have a tiny heart with an enormous will of iron, binding it shut even to the most loving parent's overtures. The challenges they present are tangible. Is there a real remedy?"

"Lonely?"
"'Socialization' is still a hot topic, huh? May I send along a piece I did on 'socialization' a couple of years ago? God bless you -- remember, don't argue when you can avoid it -- pray that God convicts your accusers of their need for Him and His direction in their lives."

"Does the Victory Lead to Holier Ground?"
"One bittersweet morning we look up and are overwhelmed to see our sons or daughters are now taller than we are. Granted, conversations are becoming more interesting, but bedroom doors may be slamming shut in your home as tempers flare. How can we outmaneuver someone who is younger, stronger and bigger than we are?"

"The Next Step:
A Few More Words on Figuring Out If and When to Put the Kids Back in School"

"Based on the comments you have e-mailed me, this remains a bit of a delicate topic: A willful child who rejects a teacher's authority can stop any kind of schooling dead. Several of you have asked if I have anything more to say on the subject."
