Couple of questions from a Sunday school class this week - the denomination is very foreign to me, but popular here in the states. This was not from a pulpit, just the person put over a group for women's studies.

(I) The term 'lovingkindness' found in the Old Testament....the claim is that 'lovingkindness' means Covenant and the reason you won't find the term 'lovingkindness' in the NT is because it's been replaced by grace. Now, I always understood the word that is translated to 'lovingkindness' doesn't really have a true English equivalent but that it referred to the mercy/love/protection between two people who are in covenant (or otherwise bound to one another legally). Am I splitting hairs? It doesn't mean covenant, but speaks to the relationship of two people in covenant.

(II) The woman said in the context of covenant sacrifices and how the OT had to perform animal sacrifices over and over, and there were nods from the crowd, that (and I'm quoting here) 'Only human blood would satisfy God and that's why Jesus had to come down as a human to die on the cross." Now, had this only been said once I would have chalked it up to very very poor phrasing or early morning confusing or distraction while speaking or something...but she repeated it twice and, like I said, the audience was nodding in agreement. My husband was raised in this denomination (but hasn't been a member for probably three decades or more)...when I came home I told him (because this really truly bothered me to the core) and all he said was "that's odd." I don't think this is the official position of the denomination, but maybe that's how it is all interpreted? I don't know. Has anyone heard this interpreted this way? It's not at all what I believe.

"Allowing Emotions to Rule the Day" ... 'Is there anybody else out there who has the problem of allowing emotions to rule her day?!' With a BIG wink I could reply -- 'Oh, no! Why here on the CHF board we ALWAYS have it together!'
