Now that dh is ill, he is no longer working. We had planned on that income to cover expenses. He recently applied for, and is getting, social security, but it is only about 75% of his previous income. So I really need to work part time to cover our expenses.|
I have been working one day a week at a local museum, mostly for fun, and subbing at my old school occasionally. But now, our schedule (and my ability to be at work) is ruled by the hospital. Yesterday, for example, they called to say the visiting nurse visit for iv fluids today was not yet approved by insurance, so I need to bring dh in at 9 am for his iv. I was scheduled to sub, so I had to cancel the sub job. I really don't like being unreliable, but I have to put first things first!
The museum closes in the winter, so that job will end till spring. Meantime, they are very caring and concerned about dh, and can be flexible if I need to leave suddenly or cancel my day, and they are willing to work around my schedule. That is a blessing, and I will continue there in the spring.
Subbing is a different story, and really not as flexible. I just can't walk out of a class with 20 teenagers if there is an emergency, and I hate to cancel planned jobs so they have to find a sub for a sub.
Our local library (which is in walking distance of our house) has an opening for an aide 10-12 hours per week. Flexible hours, very friendly staff, and they do great children's programming and want help with that. I think I am going to apply. I am hoping if I get this job that I can have a schedule that will work around dh's chemo, let me continue at the museum come spring, and bring in sufficient income to allow us to be financially comfortable.
Now, I have to write a resume. I haven't done that since 1984! Wish me luck!
