Gospel of John - the most Jewish of the Gospels? Why would a Jewish rabbi say this? Yes, this is for a discussion board that is due at midnight tomorrow. I have some ideas, but I'm looking for more ideas from you all Smile All that I'm finding on the web are other students posts that they have published as blogs, and I really don't want to reference those, needless to say.

My idea is it is because there are so many references to Jewish feasts, Jesus is undeniably introduced as Messiah in the first chapter, there are multiple interactions with Jewish leaders where Jesus points out the problems with their legalism and their close adherence to the law. This information would help the Greeks reading John to understand the points he was making - by giving them the Jewish thought behind certain behaviors. (Am I way off base in thinking this?)

What do you think?

Did somebody say that John was the most Jewish of the Gospels? What did they mean?

I personally would've tagged Matthew for that title--he includes all those prophecies that paint Jesus as the King of the Jews and the Messiah.

Yes, a Jewish Rabbi did in 1924. He called it "the most Jewish of the Gospels" I'm supposed to explain why he would have called it that, and why we direct new believers to read it first.

Coming in too late to help, but while I'd have to think a bit about it being the "most Jewish of gospels," I believe we probably direct new believers to read it first because John's whole purpose seems to be to show that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah. He wrote the book a good bit later (like 50 years, I think) than the other gospels. He didn't share so much of the day-to-day happenings that were shared in the other gospels, but focused on what Jesus said about who He really is.

We're studying John in SS this year, and it really is astounding how clear it is that Jesus must be the Son of God, an that He is the Messiah. New believers should understand that--there's no room for waffling about Him being a "good teacher." That is all laid out in John.

So...since it's after the fact...what things did the class come say about the Jewish gospel thing?

Blessings,
Lisa R.

Lisa, I don't know yet. Remember, I'm taking this class on line. I have to participate in a group discussion, so each member posts their initial response, then we respond to 2 or three of them, perhaps more than once I think. I haven't read the other posts yet, most of them had not been posted when I posted mine. That will be tomorrow.

I think we were taught that Matthew was written more directly to Jews. It begins with tracing Joseph's lineage. Luke traces Mary's.
