This arctic breeze, or whatever it is, blowing through NE FL right now is giving me a new respect for you northern women. Particularly those of you outside of the city, and particularly for those of you who are doing it more or less on your own. BRR. I can't stand even standing in my kitchen (it's almost entirely window and glass door). I've been living for the next moment of getting under the blankets either in bed or on the couch. I didn't even bother giving Jonah and I our bath/showers last night because I couldn't bare the thought of the cold air afterwards. I'm really wishing we had an electric blanket. I know I have lettuce/salad in the fridge and absolutely no desire to eat it (too cold).

I really feel that I would hibernate the entire winter if I lived any further north.

Peace

What are the temps there, Jamie?

If you roasted chicken this morning, put the carcass in a nice hot water bath and make soup! I have a big pot of homemade soup in my fridge all winter. Dh and I had some for dinner tonight.

You can also roast some potatoes and other veggies in the oven...open the door when they are done and bask in the warm air entering your kitchen.

Be sure to dress in layers...I wear yoga pants under my jeans or corduroys, and a long-sleeved tee under my flannel under a sweater or fleece...with a nice warm shawl on top. We have extra blankets on all the chairs and the couch so we can wrap up. Wool socks, if you have them,. A hat and fingerless mitts can help you be more comfy too...even indoors.

If you have curtains to cover the windows, draw them as soon as the sun goes down, since that’s when the temperature will drop...or consider temporarily hanging a blanket or quilt over the windows if you can. We actually wrap our sun porch in plastic to help keep out the cold.

Roll up towels or fill a long stocking with rice and use it to stop drafts coming in under the door.

Our temps aren't really going to impress the rest of the nation, but right now it's just past midnight with a hard-freeze warning until 11a.m. Right now the temp is 33* The low today will be 25* The blessing will be we are promised a lot of sun, where it has been pretty sky-less (like one massive cloud covering everything and blocking the sun) and wet/rainy.

I refrigerated the carcass to do tomorrow morning when the sun was up. Jonah and I will be baking banana bread in the morning, so we'll have our backs to the oven to keep us warm. We don't have that many long sleeves but have been layering. Keeping Jonah in socks is tough, LOL. Mittens aren't things we have, but Jonah and I are staying inside for the most part. Except for yesterday, when it rained and we didn't have a proper rain jacket for Jonah (outgrown) I've allowed him to go outside when it's the peak heat of the day. I kept him in yesterday because bringing in the sheets covering the plants literally pained my hands. I've been off/on sick since Thanksgiving and I don't want the rest of my family to need me while I'm still recovering if I can swing it.

Peace

Temps around freezing can be darned uncomfortable when you aren't prepared for them, especially if it is gray and humid. I think we have an easier time, because our homes have proper heat and we have proper clothing. Don't be embarrassed to just walk around wrapped in a blanket. As for barefoot kiddos...we have those here too...Kids come to school in below zero weather in flip flops and shorts here Shocked --it's a badge of honor for them to defy the cold. Confused

A couple days before the two back-to-back hard freezes, it was still cold. I forget the temp at the moment, but it had to be in the 40s is my guess. I was forced to get gas as my husband (whose job it is, and he's usually very stellar at keeping it topped off for me) had forgotten and I was near empty.

I was shivering outside under my peacoat and long sleeves at the gas pump when I noticed the couple belonging to the car on the flip side. The fellow was wearing shorts, flip flops and a tee shirt. Now, that is typical FL gear even for cold days, but not this cold. The lady was similarly dressed in non-layered summer weight tee and capris. Older people, too...and usually down here after one reaches a certain age, you don't see them play with the weather (thin skin, etc).

Then I looked at their plates: Illinois.

I thought, "It figures." Laughing

We're pretty cold, here, too. Temps have hovered around 0 degrees for a few days. Unlike you, we do have plenty of winter clothes, blankets, etc. But, it has been a few years since we've seen this kind of weather and I think our very warm winter last year spoiled us. I've been shivering constantly and had to break down and wear my coat. I HATE wearing coats and would rather be cold than be restricted by them. My DS on the other hand, I still have to force to put on a light jacket. Shocked

I went to town in a lined jacket today because it felt so warm to me it was 33. Last week it was -10 in the morning and not much warmer all day. When it gets that cold I hang quilts in our windows to hold some heat in.

It was negative twenty at Grampa's the other day in the morning..when it was negative one here...we heat with wood, so we just all stay in the warm room....and do everything listed above. good news: birds are singing and January thaw in the fifties coming our way, we hear Smile
