I don't know enough to ask. I sat in on a lecture this afternoon during a homeschooling conference. The topic was supposed to be about how to teach a child to read and ensure reading comprehension. It turned out to be so highly scientific the first third of the meeting (how brains worked, how they needed to be engaged on X number of levels, etc) and then the rest was more or less a pitch on this woman's phonics program (she created, sells the stuff) so it was completely NOT what I thought I was walking into. The first few steps made sense (it wasn't really all that different from what we've done) but then it became very difficult and rushed (she went too long on the front half so the back half was rushed).

Apparently the Dolch (?) words, etc are all analytical, but she's Synthetic (I think?)...

I don't know what it means, completely...

Would anyone like to take a stab at explaining it? Have you used this approach? The program was $125 on sale (for just the teacher manual) and the flashcards - which were a must, and apparently specially designed - were $400 (I know I fell down).

I just don't have that kind of money to teach it...but some of her criticisms of the "old way" were admittedly some of the things that I didn't care for the approach we are following. I figured if I could understand Synthetic Phonics, I could DIY it.

Peace

How Can I Pray? ... Christian parents, who have given their children so much, are amazed to see many of their children literally chuck all their labors of love and devotion. The temptations our children face are horrendous . . . and the consequences for failure to overcome them have compounded.
