I'm just stepping in here with a quick question and then I have to scoot...who here has experience with their children suddenly having imaginary friends? Jonah (5yo) has woken up suddenly with an invisible friend (introduced to me as "This is my invisible friend. Their name is Alexis.") with a very well-developed character background. Some of the things he says...I don't know if they disturb me (because they match certain lores that I am unfamiliar with..I just looked them up on the internet...ancient Egypt). I'm not saying anything spiritual is going on, though it's weird I admit...just, I remember being a lonely little kid and *trying* to force an imaginary friend (I'm just not that creative so it didn't stick and I never forgot it was pretend)...Jonah is very imaginative and very extroverted, but is lonely I would guess (at least by my definition) without any close friends. If someone was going to make it stick, it would be Jonah. For the most part, he'll still lose himself in the imagination of a puppet show - after a few minutes, he'll literally forget the puppet isn't a sentient being. He goes to the playground and has kids to play with for the most part, but even within the neighborhood and MOPs there's nothing that is "sticking." So it's from that angle...my other kids did not do this, and he's, just to remember, is the only kid in the household. He seems happy and doesn't talk about being lonely. He has asked for a little sister so he could play with her, though. (Alexis is a male, however.)

Peace

My oldest had 2 imaginary friends at one time, Johnny Wilson and Ross. Johnny Wilson lasted the longest. They did everything 'together'...jumped on the trampoline, played in the sandbox, even went shopping with us. I often heard them 'having conversations' about what they were doing, etc. I don't remember ever being alarmed about it. I always thought it was cute and and displayed his effort at imaginative play. He eventually quit 'playing' with them and never had any other imaginary friends.

My son was between the ages of 3 & 5.

Not a problem. We had lots of them around here, even with a houseful of siblings.

We indulged the play UNLESS there was misbehavior blamed on the imaginary friend.

My DD had a couple different imaginary friends. One was actually an imaginary sister. It probably lasted a year or so. And, keep in mind, she is a twin. Loneliness was not really an issue, since she had a built-in playmate. However, the imaginary friend offered something her brother couldn't and gave her an outlet for all her "girly" stuff.

Going to be the odd one out here. I know that psychologists say it is normal, and in some cases, I agree it probably is, but with a kid Jonah's age having an imaginary friend with a "well-developed background," that "match[es] certain lores" of "Ancient Egypt," unless he's been studying that stuff lately, I'd pray about the possibility of this friend being demonic in nature.

Not saying it is; lots of kids have imaginary friends who are simply imaginary. IMHO and limited experience though, I'd guess that most imaginary friends would have similar backgrounds to the actual child or his friends. Unless you'd shared knowledge of this background with Jonah, how would he be knowledgeable enough to create it? Personally, I'd pray for spiritual discernment to see whether you need to let this run its course or whether you need to find ways to discourage it.

If it's just plain ol' imaginary, I'd agree with Tracy about blaming bad behavior on an imaginary friend.

Blessings,
Lisa R.

Receiving The Holy Spirit at Salvation #1 ... This was a discussion that outlined the reasons for believing that a person receives the Holy Spirit when he/she is born again. The view that the Holy Spirit is received as a separate experience after salvation is set forth in the next file "Have You Received the Holy Spirit Since You Believed?"
