We're studying through Joshua on Wed. nights at church. Last night was Ch. 11, and as we studied the sequence of events, our pastor pointed out that many people and churches fight and argue on the concepts of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility as if we have to choose one or the other and remain only in that camp. But the Bible points out that they work together perfectly. He used vs. 6-7 to illustrate this:

"And the LORD said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.' So Joshua and all his warriors came suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them.

Here, God tells Joshua that he will give over all of them to Israel, but knowing that, Joshua doesn't just sit back and wait for it to happen...he and his men still go into battle. The rest of the chapter talks of the Lord giving them into their hands, and them chasing and striking them until the last verse which says, "... And the land had rest from war."

I know we've had many discussions here over the years on this topic, so I thought this perspective might be an interesting one to share. It's a good picture of how the two things work together, IMHO.

Blessings,
Lisa R.
