[Support our Advertisers!] Contributions from our Members:   Overcoming Opposition ... A study using Mark 5:1-20. Jesus had suggested the trip and the disciples had willing followed. As they followed the instructions of Jesus they were met with opposition from the devil, i.e. the storm and the raging sea. Opposition could be expected since they were going about the business of plundering strongholds of the enemy. [Support our Advertisers!]

My nephew called and asked me to do the opening prayer at my sister's memorial service. The service will be held at the funeral home. The family is not particularly religious and don't want a service at a church.

In keeping with their preferences, I would like to be brief, but to offer a scripture reading that is comforting and hopeful, as well as a brief prayer or poem. Nothing too sentimental or maudlin...I don't want to cry while speaking.

My sister was a public health nurse. She was well loved in her profession--when she retired, a wing of the hospital where she taught was named after her. She has two sons in their 20s and a brand new grandson (who was born shortly after her death).

Can you help me with a few ideas, please?

I'm so sorry for your loss. Please know I'm lifting you before the Lord as you walk through this.

I really am not sure about these things. What comes to mind for funerals is Ps. 23, of course, and also Ps. 116:15, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints," if that applies (I don't know that the rest of that psalm fits for a service of non-believers.

Maybe in light of her profession, the passage about giving a cup of cold water in my name, or reaping what you sow.

Was your sister herself a believer? That would color what I say as much as whether the family were or not. Some truth from scripture rejoicing in her reward that could speak to the hearts of the mourners without being overtly "preachy" might be a good choice.

I'm hoping others will pop in with better thoughts.

Blessings,
Lisa R.

I cannot make a judgement about who is or is not a believer. I am open to the idea that a believer may not be strongly affiliated with any denomination, and that's OK with me. I think most of this family have a generally Christian upbringing and mindset, and would state that they have Christian beliefs.

My sister lived her beliefs in her constant loving care for others. She showed Christ's love to family, clients, and everyone she met, every day. Who am I to judge whether she was a believer or not? I do believe that God gave her a heart of service and love, and that she embraced His calling in her life work. But she was not a church goer or a scripture scholar, and she was very private about her spirituality.

"The Heart of the Matter" ... This prayer went to the heart of the matter - I was aching to find the time to spend with God regularly, constantly, to live before His Holy Presence!!!
