We do pledges for missions just to give the missions board a ballpark idea of how many missionaries we can afford to support yearly. Everything else is freewill offerings.

I put free will, and I think that is the way all of our budgeting including missions is done. However, I don't have a problem with pledges for specific things, such as missions or a building fund. But even those are "free will", as in no one will be knocking down your door asking for your payment this month!

Are we in Hot Topics? I confess I detest pledge drives. I get the idea of knowing approximately how much to budget, but income can vary so much. I just don't like all the asking and gimmicks (that I grew up with).

In our current church, we have been building, and for the building program, they let us know what they were hoping to do, and had a couple of "special offerings" on various Sundays...they gave a goal and asked us to pray about what to give...but that was all. (They also built the building on an "as cash is available basis" )

Blessings,
Lisa R.

Lisa, I agree, and actually this is what we are doing. We are in the midst of some major remodeling, and it gets done as the funds come in.

Generally our board sets the budget based on what ministries tell them they anticipate needing for the coming year, then trust that the Lord will cover what is needed.

So I guess free will offering ..

Our denomination does a pledge drive for their global missions fund, but we generally just give what we feel led, I've never cared for pledging...not sure why.. just a preference I guess.
