Don't forget to watch out for the trials and tests that are bound to come your way! Last Monday marked the formal beginning of our new homeschool year. I woke up unusually early and thought I'd get a head start on the busy day -- by the time the children woke up, I was ready to go back to bed for a nap. Instead, I drank another cup of strong coffee and prayed for strength... [Support our Advertisers!]

I have recently heard several ministers say that because certain people betrayed them those people were cursed. For example, a man viciously tried to split an aquaintace's church and succeeded. Now, I have heard it said several times, that is why this man was struck with cancer. (the man who hurt the church was struck with cancer!) I have recently heard this type of thing said several times by different leaders and to be honest it REALLY bothers me.

So where do these type of things come from? Why would a pastor say that a person is cursed for betraying them or damaging their ministry? Is there ANY biblical idea or even a smidgen of truth to what they say?

I don't like the idea, at all. I guess I would pray mercy on my enemies not doom...unless they were hurting the weak such as my children in my orpahange. I just might not be so nice in that case.. Wink

I don't know, Mary Jo. I would have that pass through my mind if I heard of something fairly severe happening to someone after they have seriously caused me or mine harm. However, I agree with you with red flagging this altogether. I tend to think that this is the other side of the same coin when people praise God for things going well, like their team winning or their being the one narrowly escaping something that others did not. Definitely God can do either one...but the frequency to which it is credited is a bit dubious to me.

Peace

Elisha cursed some kids for making fun of his bald head. That's the only thing I can think of. ??

I think assuming someone is cursed based on actions is a slippery slope. We're all sinners. There are consequences to sin, and consequences to obedience, we reap what we sow, and we should always be mindful to praise God for our blessings and to "give thanks in all things" but IMVHO, saying So-and-So did such-and-such and then A Bad Thing Befell Them and it's obviously a curse of God, is putting words in God's mouth and seeking to know His thoughts.

I remember when Katrina hit the south and people claimed that New Orleans was hit so hard because it's such a sinful city. Now, I'm not going to argue that it is or isn't but doesn't the rain fall on the just and the unjust? And New Orleans sits in a cereal bowl so I think it's terribly presumptuous to claim to know the ways of God.

Paul says those who preach another gospel will be accursed. But to claim a curse on someone who personally damages me? Nothing that I can see in scripture.

Now the divisive man is to be disciplined and God will bring His discipline. But I do not believe we are supposed to go around cursing others or claiming a curse from God.

In His Joy and Grace,

Kate

Thank you ladies..." )

I am mostly concerned with the amount of power the person is thinking he has. The idea is, you betray me, you will be cursed! WRONG! I refuse to attribute so much power to myself. People can and will and have betrayed me but I do not think their misfortune came about because they betrayed me...Now, if they betray God, that is a different story! Smile
