Electoral College[ 24 vote(s) ]
1.I like the electoral college system and want it to stay this way 5 / 21%
2.I don't like the electoral college system and I think our president should be voted in by popular vote 15 / 63%
3.I don't care one way or the other 3 / 13%
4.What is the electoral college? 1 / 4%

I think the electoral college is a farce and we should be electing our president by popular vote.

Here is a link for anyone who voted #4.

I would very much like to hear from someone who likes it the way it is. I'm sincerely interested in learning why it is still a good idea.

The electoral college is all about representation by state. Those of us in small states should have some equality in our representation with larger states, so that our state's interests are served...that's the reasoning behind the electoral college.

I personally like the "one person, one vote" plan.

Is state's rights still relevant? Or should we move toward being one nation, rather than the "United States"?

I actually think that the advent of instant communications and the ease of travel has changed the ball game somewhat. But I don't think we are quite ready to give up state's rights. Hmmmm.....

I am all about states rights but I still think popular vote is the way to go for the presidential election.

We are not a democracy. Democracy is mob rule. We are a constitutionally federated republic. And the rights of states as a unit are very important to maintain. I consider the electoral college part of that just and wise form of government. It carries out the function of a representational republic, a balance between mob rule (or the popular vote) and representational government, much like the balance constitutionally mandated between the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Okay, Robin, if so I think a fairer way to assign delegates would be like they assign congressmen. You get 2 per state no matter what your size is and then the remainder based on population.

We can't just scrap the Constitution because it cinfuses us. The Federalist Papers are a good resource to help interpret the intentions of the founding fathers.

I had to go back and do some research after what Leigh said. For some reason I thought that the electoral college was started in the late 1700s, early 1800w and not an original idea of the founders. I was wrong on that. I need to rethink this whole thing.

When I read this quote in an article [about Newt] today I thought of this thread:

"The greatest weakness of our electoral system is that the skills needed to win an election are not necessarily the skills needed to govern."

The Electoral College is based on population just like the House of Representatives. The number is different, but it's population based. I'm sure there will be changes since the 2010 Census. I think New York and Ohio lost seats, but maybe Florida gained one?

"Stretching Hope" ... Laughter helped turned things around. A good dose of humor tore down the strong, hard walls that were being built up between the two of us. The walls that had prevented us from reaching out to each other, encouraging one another, praying for one another, and loving each other.
