How often do you and your children make your beds?[ 36 vote(s) ]
1.We strive to make our beds every day 13 / 36%
2.We make our beds most days 0 / 0%
3.I make my bed most days but the children don't 9 / 25%
4.We hardly ever make our beds 9 / 25%
5.Other, please specify 5 / 14%

I admit it, I have been neglectful in this. I have not required my children to make their beds unless we have company coming. I decided to remedy this and am meeting resistance. I am choosing not to quash the rebellion outright. Instead, I will check if i am being unreasonable, as my older children maintain. Smile

Thanks for your help!

For the record, I don't think you're being unfair. My sons will throw the comforter over their bed in the mornings, but it's not "made". It's neat looking. I make my bed, as in re-doing the corners, smoothing, nice, tight most every morning.

I make my bed EVERY SINGLE DAY (that wasn't one of the options Very Happy ), before I leave my bedroom in the morning.

I can't remember what my dc did...I think we made beds every morning when they were little, but I don't think they did it when they were teens. I know they don't do it now as adult married women. Mad

If I had it to do over, yes, I'd be sure that dc made their beds every.single.day. To me, it's a basic homemaking thing. I also don't like the idea of only doing some household things just because company is coming. I want my home to be tidy and welcoming all the time, 'cuz I live here, if for no other reason. Wink

Currently living in an RV, Dh and I are the only ones with a "real" bed. I make my bed most days. My oldest sleeps on a mattress on the fold out couch...so everyday it must be removed and the couch folded back up. My other two have bunks....bunks in RV's aren't like normal bunks. One child keeps her bed made and sleeps on top with a blanket. My son on the otherhand...well that's a whole nuther story...he has sheets on the bed, but sleeps with a sleeping bag.

When we lived in the house, I usually made my bed everyday, and the kids...made them most of the time, but esp when we were having company.

I voted other. My 7 year old son has a thing about making MY bed. Laughing He just about pushes me out every morning. My 7 and 9 year old always get up and make their bed. I've never made (or honestly even asked) that they make their beds. The 19, 17, and 5 year old don't.

We should, it makes everything look much neater, even if it's not.

I make mine every day, but the kids - HA! They only make them when I ask them to, usually when company comes and I wash the sheets! My ds's girlfriend will make the bed she sleeps on every time she's here, unless I ask her not to so I can wash the sheets.

ETA - it's not something I stress over. My oldest dd was a sloppy teen, who married a neat freak. Problem solved Smile My oldest ds is still sloppy, as is his wife, so who cares!

We made our beds once a week, when we changed the sheets, for years. I never saw the point (unless we were giving house tours or the Queen was coming to visit Wink )--we were just going to mess them up again that night!

However, now I do make the bed (at least, straighten the sheets and pull up the coverlet) because dh has become a more active sleeper than he used to be, and I would never have a blanket otherwise!

My children now all live in homes where beds are made every day. Go figure. Confused

Dd makes her bed almost daily - usually takes one day off a week. Same for me.

Ds only makes his bed when I tell him to. Until 2 years ago, he made his bed daily. Then I got hurt and was out of commission for three months and literally could not inspect his room, so bed-making went by the wayside for him. I decided there are more important battles. He knows HOW to make a bed and does it when I ask him to for company or whatever, so I don't worry about it.

dh....always (he usually comes back in the room later in the day after I am up and makes the bed during a visit to the bathroom).

kids....depends on who it is. I have three girls and three boys in two rooms. There is one in each room who is a neat-nick and the other two are slobs.

I make our bed daily. I hate getting into a messy bed at night. DS, now that he's an adult, never makes his bed. As a child he was required to make it but since he turned 18 he chooses not to do it.

I don't during the day because I like to climb in for a nap when I can.

Me, mostly yes, out of habit.

Kids, almost never, unless company is coming.

If dh were a fanatic about made beds, it would be different but he truly does not care one way or the other, and I haven't made an issue out of it; it's not a battle I choose to fight. Smile

A clean-freak friend required her adult-son-living-at-home to make his bed. If he left the house with the bed unmade, she dumped pulled the bedding off and dumped the mattress on the floor!

I get up, Dave goes to bed. Dave gets up. I go to bed. Our bed is never made unless I've changed the sheets. Neither do our kids since it was never really a part of our day.

Almost never. Kevin and I get up at different times. Once I leave my bedroom, I'm gone and usually don't return until night time. However, I WILL straighten the sheets and blankets before I get in.

Our children sleep in bunkbeds and they are just difficult to make (top as well as bottom).

Personally, I really don't care one way or the other.

Kate

I make the bed most days. If I don't, dh is likely to do it when he gets home from work. Our bedroom is very visible to anyone walking through our house (and lots of people do so!). People are also in and out of our bedroom all the time, so I can't count on the door remaining closed. No one else probably thinks about it, but when I see our unmade bed I am likely to immediately think of what went on there recently Wink and I unreasonably feel that I am broadcasting. Very Happy So that's my thing about my bed.

Making the bed was always part of the morning routine for my little ones. I didn't make an issue of it - it was just part of the routine. When they got to the point that they were doing other morning prep things independently, such as not needing to be reminded to brush teeth (10-13 years old), I quit checking the bed. Most of them (4 or 5 out of the six kids) make their beds most days.

You could do something similar with your kids - insist for those not yet teens (or whatever you decide) that we are going to make our beds, and if any resist tell them that they will get to make their own choice about it when they are __ years old. I definitely don't think it's worth pushing with the teens, but I think it is training worth having for younger kids.

Every day. I can't stand getting into bed at night when the covers are all messed up. I think it also makes the bedroom look 80 percent cleaner when the bed is made. And it only takes 2 minutes! Wink My dc makes theirs every day too. Evil or Very Mad Smile

I would vote other. I make my bed everyday. My room is beautiful and why would I let something so simple mess it up? I have a comforter and takes less than two minutes to get it in order. It's what helps start my day. Like brushing my teeth and getting dressed. I would never start my day without those things.
My children made their beds when they were little, as a part of their morning routine. They never thought twice about it was just routine like brushing their teeth. As teens I didn't require it and they chose not to make their beds.

I also agree that making a bed makes the room seem cleaner instantly.

I almost always make our bed and it is very easy because all we like on it is a comforter. Neither of us like cold sheets against our skin.

I have taught the kids to make their beds but now that they are older, they don't always do it. I choose not to make a big fuss about it because for the most part, their rooms are otherwise clean. They are required to vacuum, dust, etc., on a regular basis.

Blessings,
~N
