Did Jesus think the earth was flat?[ 38 vote(s) ]
1.Yes - because everyone did back then. 1 / 3%
2.No - because as God he would have known differently. 29 / 76%
3.Don't know - the Bible doesn't mention it. 5 / 13%
4.Something else 3 / 8%

Dean and I were talking about this last night, and wondered what y'all thought... I can add more options if these four don't cover it, but this is what we thought about...

I don't think everyone did then anyway....I've read several places that waaay waaay back in "recorded history", that sailors had noticed that as ships approached, they seemed to be coming "up"and going away, often going "down" over the horizon...and many people knew it wasn't flat.

Well, OK maybe not "everybody" but the Israelites were not a seagoing nation, so it would be extremely unlikely that a carpenter from Galilee would know differently unless it was "supernatural" knowledge, IMO.

I put don't know. I've often wondered what he did know though. It would have been so interesting to hear the debates between him and other young adults as that's the age of bantering ideas. If Jesus knew stuff it would be a hoot!

I thought the catholic church decided the earth was flat? Wasn't there a greek philosopher who proved the earth curved because of shadows? So I think (thought)the earth being round was the common belief of the era. But I don't remember where or when or if I was taught that.

I found what I think I was thinking of, if that makes sense http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth#Ancient_Mediterranea n

Is it reasonable to assume that a circle is a sphere?

Isaiah 40:22 "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"

"....And if your Master’s truth offends the gentlemen to whom you speak of it let them be offended. His name we must confess; of His glory we will continually talk…" Charles Spurgeon

This is the verse that came to my mind immediately after reading the question.

Since Jesus is God and all things were made by Him, I think it's obvious that the Lord Jesus knew the shape of the earth.

Quote:

Jhn 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all [men] through him might believe. He was not that Light, but [was sent] to bear witness of that Light. [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

I was thinking that since He was there at creation and part of it, he would have known.

This question is interesting, since it gets to the "bigger" question of how much of and which of His attributes did He "set aside", if He did, when He became a man --> fully God/fully man.

Did He know the earth was not flat when He was in the womb? What did He learn, as He went on??
