[Support our Advertisers!] Contributions from our Members:   Pastor... is the office Scriptural?  God has from the beginning ordained that there be those who have the gift and responsibility of leadership, both within the confines of the family, as well as the broader context of the Church.  Church history shows that all of the major assemblies had a plurality of elders but it seems clear that the Biblical pattern shows one leading elder (called a pastor or bishop) who is responsible for the direction and oversight of the local assembly. In the College and Career Sunday School class that I sit in on, one of the young adults asked the SS teacher to discuss differences between various overviews of theology and the timeline of history. The discussion was very interesting.

Here's a poll

I have to say that I have yet to figure out all the different theology labels to figure out where I fit into people's charts/categories, etc.

I try very hard to have a biblical theology, wherever that fits in. Very Happy

Blessings,
Lisa R.

That's what I was going to say. I grew up with dispensational teaching which sounded good. A few years ago we attended a church that taught covenant theology and some of that sounded good, too. By "good", I mean Biblical.
I have yet to sit down with good definitions of both camps and figure out exactly where I fit.

Only three things are necessary to make life happy: the blessing of God, books, and a friend.

We've been looking at this (in a round about way) in our SS that Kevin teaches.

I have some problems with various types of dispensationalism (and there are MANY). I don't agree with Covenant Theology because they believe that the covenant/promises made to Abraham were spiritual only and ultimately intended for the church and that God is pretty much finished with Israel.

For anyone trying to check into this, do a NT search (from Acts on) for the word "promise(*)" and study all the places where this occurs. It has been very illuminating to see how the promises to Abraham apply to us.

This guy is anti-dispensationalist, I think...he's got an interesting chart contrasting the two approaches:

The problem is that dispensationalism does not have just one meaning. I disagree with a number of his conclusions of dispensationalism. The problem is that most people who are "anti" something never accurately portray what the opposing side really says. This makes your side look much more plausible and accurate. I think this is what he is doing.

Well, I don't have time to get into it all, but let's say I disagree with the following "distinctions":

1, (to an extent 2, but that might just me be), 3, (4 doesn't make any sense to me since Jesus said that He would BUILD His church...so how could it be in the OT - but do we see that the OT promises would be part of the blessings of the church? Absolutely!), 5, and 6.

Now, whether I am a dispensationalist or not, I'm not sure. I believe that God make one set of promises to Abraham and his decendants and in the NT the Jews rejected God and His promises and the Gentiles were allowed to receive the blessings and promises through the same faith - we became adopted children and therefore heirs of the same promises. And the time will come when all of Israel will return in repentance to God through belief in Messiah Jesus and will be grafted back to the vine - we end up as God started...one people, one promise.

In His Joy and Grace,

Kate
