Nursing and cycles returning[ 30 vote(s) ]
1.When nursing I never had any cycles 11 / 37%
2.When nursing I had lighter/shorter cycles than usual 4 / 13%
3.When nursing I had normal cycles, but not sure if I was fertile 3 / 10%
4.When nursing I had heavier cycles than usual 1 / 3%
5.I got pregnant while nursing so I obviously was fertile, regardless of cycles 4 / 13%
6.I got pregnant while nursing without ever having a cycle at all 1 / 3%
7.Something else 6 / 20%
8.I was on medication/OCP/treatment which interferes with my cycles anyway 0 / 0%

Went to the doctor yesterday for my 6 week check, and found out some interesting stuff about menstrual cycles returning while fully nursing (this includes doing overnight feeds). Just wondering what this group's experience was/is?

I never had a cycle until I had completely weaned BUT I never believed that I couldn't get pregnant while nursing.

I put never had cycles, but they did return during the final weeks of nursing when output was pretty low (i.e. baby slightly over a year old).

I started my cycle at about 10 month after delivery and then it was lighter then normal. I weaned at 19 months.

I have a friend that became pregnant while nursing with no period in between. Her kids are 12.5 months apart in age. She found that her milk supply went down dramatically and her baby ended up losing weight and needed to be hospitalized and monitored. That all happened before she realized that she was pregnant.

I nursed mine till they were about 18-20 months old. I think my cycles returned at about 12 months or so, but were light and irregular. I was doing NFP, and didn't ovulate till some time after my cycles began. By the way, I was working full time from the time each child was 6 weeks old (dh was home with the kids), expressing milk for one feeding during the day. They nursed more often at night, though....

I picked something else.

I nursed all 5 dc for their 1st year, at least. My cycle returned just about the same time each of them started walking, some as early as 8 1/2 months.

I've had as few as one cycle before getting pregnant with the next dc. I was taught that MOST women have what is called a "herald cycle" before fertility returns.

I answered something else. I held off on solid foods generally until 6 months and then sometime after that my cycles would start and they seemed normal. But I was still nursing.

However, I never seemed to cycle after my third child, and became pregnant again with my fourth when the third was nine months. Wonderful surprise! I went over 2 years without a period. It was great! ETA: I was still nursing number 3 and did for a few more months when I got pregnant with number 4.

I had all c-sections. I don't know if that's a factor or not.

I didn't vote because I had no cycles for the first 6 months I nursed, but I nursed for 11-13 months, so I did have cycles for the last half of the time I nursed. The turning point (6 mo) was when I started feeding baby food and nursing less. I think everyone must be different!

I've gotten pregnant four times while nursing, usually around about the one year mark, although two of my boys are only thirteen months apart.

I always had a "cycle" with the hormonal shift that occurs around the six week mark. So much happens then, hormone changes, growth spurt for baby, milk supply pretty much established. After that cycle things were pretty light and I would be working on getting regular, and boom....pregnant again.

The exception was when I probably first became insulin resistant. My cycles after that baby were absolutely whacky, and completely defied any pattern at all.

I got pregnant 3 times while nursing after having one or two irregular cycles. With my 4th child, I got pregnant when I was still nursing VERY often - like all through the night. Exclamation

Haven't read any of the responses but:

-a full time nursing Mom GENERALLY does not ovulate for 56 days after the birth of the baby

-anytime after that ovulation can resume

-ovulation begins first with a mentral period coming afterwards

-GENERALLY SPEAKING, if you breast feed at least every 2 1/2 hours and 2-3 times during the night, ovulation often does not resume

-some women resume their cycle by 6 weeks, no matter how often they nurse

-some women do not resume their cycle until they fully stop breast feeding, even if they only nurse once every other day

-ovulation is often likely to resume when solid foods are started or when baby begins to sleep during the night

The reality is, there IS no absolute rule when it comes to nursing and resuming of the cycle. Every woman will be different and very often every time after a new baby will be different. As a woman ages, it will be different. So much depends on how hard a baby suckles and that changes from baby to baby.

So, basically, you need to look on the time of nursing as a "fertile" time. If you are wanting to avoid pregnancy, you should take precautions. If you don't care, then it doesn't matter! Wink

With my first, ovulation resumed within 2 weeks of her starting on baby cereal.

With my second, I didn't have a period at all and was pregnant at 10 months.

With my third, my cycle didn't resume until 1 month after I finished nursing when she was 18 months.

With my fourth, my cycle returned when she was 10 months old even though she was still only nursing (no solids of any kind).

With my fifth, my cycle returned when she was 12 months old, about a week or so after she started on solid foods.

With my sixth and seventh, my cycle returned when he was 9 months old - still no solids.

With my eighth, my cycle returned when he was 12 months old, had just started solids.

All of my babies I nursed at least until they were 15 months old and some until they were almost 20, depending on the baby.

Kate

I put something else. I nursed exclusively until 6 mo., started baby food & continued to nurse almost 'til 12 mo.

I started my period at 3 or 4 mo. I never made the connection before, but Ds did sleep thru the night at 10 or 12 weeks, so it could be that, as Kate said.

With my first child I did not have a cycle. I got pg with second child when first was 11 months old. Obviously I had ovulated. We were not using birth control as I hadn't had a period, and I was nursing, so it was "safe". Very Happy I really worked out well to have them close. I'm happy! Smile

I nursed all three of mine to at least a year and with each my periods returned sometime between 9 and 10 months. I did get pregnant with my third while still nursing the second when he was around 10 months old.

It varied from my first baby where I had 6 weeks post partum bleeding, followed by a week off and started regular cycles the next week Sad to going about 7 months without a cycle before starting. I always started before weaning. I had a couple of babies where there was one cycle and the another pregnancy, but not instances of no cycle before a pregnancy. I got pregnant several times while still nursing, so if wondering if it is good for contra-conception---don't count on it!!! Very Happy

It seems to be quite different for every woman, and in many cases for every nursing experience.

Blessings,
Lisa R.
