Where do you have or prefer to keep your home computer?[ 31 vote(s) ]
1.In a seperate home office away from the kids 1 / 3%
2.In a seperate home office for all to enjoy 4 / 13%
3.In a common area of the home like the living room or dinning room 23 / 74%
4.In our bedroom or another bedroom away from the kids 2 / 6%
5.In our bedroom or other bedroom for all to enjoy 1 / 3%

I am trying to figure out where to put our home computer when we move. In our old house we had a seperate home office and I loved it. When we moved to this house we did not have a seperate home office so we had to put it in the master bedroom. This was not too much of a problem since the room is large and is located right off of the livingroom and dinning room. I can sit at my desk and see clear into the living room, dinning room and kitchen. At the new home however the master is not so conviently open to the other parts of the house. We thought about putting it in the great room that is connected to the kitchen and dinning room, but I am worried about the kids messing with it. Where do all of you have yours and why?

We have two desk tops in the school room / office area.

Dh has a laptop that he uses all over the house.

Ds has a laptop that he uses all over the house. Most of the time I am on it though. Very Happy

We have 3 computers (only 2 are unpacked right now). My lap top is in the dining room on the small table (we have 2 tables in there) and that is where I do my schoolwork. The other one is in the family room. We have always kept the computers in public areas.

Ours is in the living room now and will more than likely be in the dining room in the new house. Smile

We did have the computer, for a very short time, in a back bedroom.....our son, then 13 years old, would spend late hours e-mailing all his friends (we did not have internet service at that time) so we moved it to the common area of the house, as he needed his sleep!

We have never returned it to a room of it's own, as it is just to easy to have offensive things pop up when you are not looking for it.

I like to have the computer in the middle of everything. That way when I use it, I am still available to the dc, and as they get older and know how to work everything, there is no opportunity for them to use it without supervision.

Our family rule is that family computers are ONLY put in commons areas. These computers have internet access and it is an absolute rule in our home that the internet is ONLY to be viewed in full view of everyone, for safety sake.

Both dh & I have our computers conveniently located between the family room and the dining room so the dc are Always in sight Smile I tomato stake so the dc messing w/the computer isn't an issue. Since I'm on the computer a large part of the day (homeschool, business & fellowship) it wouldn't work at all to have it in an office or any kind of separate room.

This is the first house that has an extra room to use strictly as office. Before this time, we always had the computer in a common area.

We have teen sons, so we are very aware of the risks. Dh has had talks with them about using the internet and they understand that we check the history regularly. They also understand that if we find that inappropriate sites have been visited, they will be restricted to supervised use only. Thus far we haven't had a problem.

I should also add that when they were younger they did not have internet use. As they got older we let them use the internet for school, with supervision. They are 16 and 18 now and use the internet all the time and both have myspace accounts.

Blessings,
KarlaB

I think this one really depends a lot on the age pf your kids as well as your house setup!

When my dc were little and we lived in little houses, the computer was in the living room/common areas. Noone used the computer but me.

When the dc got older they started to use the computer for a few things, but we then had two computers and only one hooked up to the internet. We also had a room that we used as a school room, so the computers went in there.

Now my dc are 12 and 14. We have 3 computers, 2 hooked to the net, the 3rd soon. They are all in our new school room in the basement. It is tucked out of sight, but I check not only history but history erases Smile regularly. If there is ever a problem everyone knows the consequences.

We don't really like the computer in a common room anymore beasue we like to shut it down and have it out of sight, and my desk is often not the cleanest thing around. Very Happy Very Happy

Our dc are 9 and 5, well dd is almost 6.I keep the computer away from them because they mess with it. They have their own computer that is located in ds's room. It is not hooked up to the internet and has only educational games and some of their lesson stuff on it. I have never allowed them to get online by themselves. If there is something they want to know, we sit down together and I look it up for them and we look at the websites together. This new house is set up to where we could easily have it in the big room(I don't know what to call this room, it is one big room that contains the kitchen seperated with a bar and this giant space that is much too big for just a dinning room), I just worry about the kids messing with it and the fact that my computer desk is HUGE! It would take up so much space and it doesn't really go with the decor in the house. Dh and I both have laptops but dh's is for work and mine doesn't hardly work........it is old. I don't plan to allow the kids online by themselves until they are teenagers.

I didn't read all the replies, so I probably am repeating. Our rule is that all computers except dh's laptop/office computer must be in a common area. [And we're wobbly about our college-aged son's laptop -- he had been using it regularly in his bedroom, but lately just on his own initiative has been primarily using it downstairs at the kitchen table.]

That rule has stood us in good stead. I have several friends who didn't think that it mattered and had computers in more remote parts of the house...only to find that their children had wandered into various really awful places on the internet, and it wasn't caught for a very long time because it wasn't a high-traffic area.

It also has turned up "danger signals" in kids' friends from time to time when they would move, say, a laptop from a common area of our house to another more remote part of the house. That has helped several other families, to be perfectly honest.

We have a laptop, so right now I am laying on the floor next to Alfalfa our dear old dog. But the official desk is as much as possible right in the middle of the whole house.

It is a large antique oak teacher's desk like you would imagine Laura Ingalls to have in her days of teaching. On top I have a small plant with a lace doily underneath it, and a lamp that also has a lace doily (I am going through a doily craze right now Very Happy) underneath it.

The desk is in the living room next to the doorway to the kitchen. The printer I keep upstairs in the TV cabinet in our room cause it takes too much room on the desk. It is plugged into the wall and ready to hook up to laptop whenever I need it.

We've always kept our main computer in the common areas of the house -- the dc have just had to learn to leave it alone! Wink Once upon a time, we had an office area adjacent to the living room. That was my favorite set-up; I could be at the computer and still keep an eye on what the kids were doing, but the clutter was separated from the living room.

When we were moving into our current house, there was one room (supposed to be the formal living and dining room) that we couldn't decide what to call it. After several times of telling someone to put something in the formal living room/the room with the fishtank, the room with the bookcase/the room with the kids' computers, I finally said we'll just call it "Room A". It's stuck! Very Happy

As a practical issue, if it's an XP, you can set up multiple accounts with passwords, so that your kids can only log into their own accounts and can't (for instance) change your settings.

Or if you don't want them on it at all, without your input, then you just password protect the one log-in account.

I mean this kindly Honey...but if you don't want them messing with it, then that is a displine issue and you just need to crack down on it. They're certainly old enough to learn/know, and remember not to touch YOUR computer...if they want to play they can go play on their own.

That said...we have ours in our bedroom. We also have the tv in here. Our livingroom is rather small and for me not comfortable enough...so we all gather in here. The kids watch their PBS, I can sit on the puter...we're all together. DD1 is allowed online to Millsbury ONLY (thank you for telling me about it ladies...she loves it!) And only if I'm sitting right on the bed to watch..and she's 11. If the Lord wills and we move somewhere that we have a more friendly family room then we'll put it in there.

So now the Lord says, "Stop right where you are! Look for the old, godly way; and walk in it. Travel its path and you will find rest for your souls. ~Jer 6:16

We have two computers, although only one is hooked up right now. Need to buy a desk for that one. The one that is hooked up is in the schoolroom/office. Once we hook up the other one we will put it in the family room to use more as a play computer.

We actually have 4 desk tops. Embarassed I keep mine here in the kitchen. I was fortunate to have a little built in desk area and my filing cabinet sits right next to that with my old laser printer on it. So I can access my recipes lickety-split and my daughter often plays with her Webkins right here in my sight.

Now upstairs in my craft room is another desk top and various printers and scanner. I use this mainly for my digital photo organization and dd sometimes plays games on it. It is not always hooked up to the internet. Dh has to hook it up to the wireless internet in the house when we want to go on-line.

Downstairs in the Man Cave, dh has a desk top and multiple printers, one being excellent for photos and a great color printer. I can also access his printers from my computers.

In the Livingroom/Heritage room sits his brand new desk top. This is only temporary, he says Wink until he can get the one in the basement out and does everything to it he needs to do before putting the new one down there. The living room/Heritage room is a room we use like a parlor, with a few chairs and rockers, and is full of our heritage items, like antiques, pictures of our parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc., momentos that belong to our ancestors and the like. It is supposed to stay "pretty" and is now being taken over by my techno-geek hubby! Embarassed

All three of us have laptops. I seldom use mine in the house. We generally take them to our favorite "hot spot" in town. Dd got an old laptop from her grandma and dh updated it and gave it more ram, etc. She loves it.

That's my "pooter" situation.
