Quotes to Ponder
Being a Mother!
As I sat here typing, my daughter started talking to me, interrupting my thoughts. I was so irritated, but I gave her my full attention. I have to chuckle at myself now for being irritated. She told me a cute, silly story, we laughed together, and then she hugged and kissed me, telling me how much she loved me.
I sometimes wonder why the Lord has let me be a mother. I can be such a selfish, grouchy woman, but I am so very thankful that He has given me this work. I can trust the Lord to work in me each day to be the mother He has called me to be. It takes me choosing to be this mother, to give my full attention when my thoughts are elsewhere, to hold my tongue when every vocal chord wants to scream, to give selflessly when my own desires feel unfulfilled. But, oh, the precious, sweet rewards!! It reminds me of Luke 12:34 ... For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Being a giving, loving mother requires spending time with the Lord, letting Him refresh my soul. I am reading an encouraging book by Sally Clarkson called Seasons of a Mother's Heart. In the chapter titled "Beside Still Waters", she writes ...
I need regular moments in my life like that morning walk, times of refreshment and restoration that fill up the spiritual well in my heart that is too often left dry by the spirit-draining hustle and bustle of contemporary life. If I don't take care to keep it filled, I soon find I have no spiritual refreshment to give to those God has put into my life, especially my always-thirsty children. When I let my well run dry, I am no longer able to be a source of refreshing water to them, or to others. To say it more simply, I cannot keep giving out without taking in.
I read that quote on Sunday evening, sitting in my recliner, sipping on some tea. It explained the reason behind my weekend. I had spent most of Saturday at a prayer and fasting retreat. On Sunday we attended a beautiful worship service. On Sunday afternoon I spent over an hour paddling around a lake in the unusual 80 degree weather. These were all moments of refreshment for me. I needed each of them for I had been feeling dry. In A Woman's Guide to Spiritual Warfare, Quin Sherrer and Ruthanne Garlock write ...
As we submit to these disciplines of prayer, fasting, patience in hardship, and controlling our thoughts, we truly can become women warriors empowered by the Holy Spirit. And all that we do will be to the glory of God our Father.
Isn't that a wonderful hope, that all "we do will be to the glory of God our Father"?!! It's time for lunch here. After lunch, I will be reading aloud from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. (Last week I used a quote from this wonderful story.) This story has been another way the Lord has been restoring my soul, has been strengthening me as a mother. I guess I could sit here all day typing in all the refreshment that the Lord has been giving to me, the things that Jesus has been doing for me ... which brings to mind a song by Pearl Brick, "How Can I Tell You", ...
How can I tell you
What Jesus has done for me
How could you ever see
How He turned me around
How could I ever show the change He has brought in me
You see I was lost but now I am found
All I can ever do is thank Him
All I can ever do is praise His holy name
All I can ever do is thank Him and praise Him
I want to thank you Lord and praise Your holy name
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. - Psalm 23:1-3
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. - Phil 4:8-9
