I Can't Take It Anymore!
"I can't take it anymore!" I cried this out as tears streamed down my cheeks. I was pleading with the Lord to sell our house that weekend. I felt I couldn't go on with the possibility of another person trudging through our home and not buying it. Everyday we have had to keep the house ready for a potential buyer to show up at any moment; not an easy task for a homeschool family.
Poor little Kathy! Oh, the troubles I was going through! *sheepish grin* A little dose of reality was what I needed. In my Bible reading, I was at 2 Corinthians 11 (verses 23 through 29) where Paul writes ...
Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
Now Paul knew troubles and suffering! I was upset at myself for "wasting" God's time with my selfish complaint. It was complaining; evidence that I wasn't completely convinced that He was in control of the situation. There were so many more important, dire requests that I needed to lift up in prayer, but, as long as I whined about the selling of our house, I felt ineffective. I was stressed out because I was failing to trust God about our move. In E.M. Bounds on Prayer, E.M. Bounds writes ...
Trust is faith that has become absolute, approved, and accomplished. When all is said and done, there is a sort of risk in faith and its exercise. But trust is firm belief; it is faith in full bloom. Trust is a conscious act, a fact of which we are aware.
... Do we believe without a doubt? When we pray, do we believe that we will receive the things we ask for, not on a future day, but then and there? This is the teaching of this inspiring scripture. How we need to pray, "Lord, Increase our faith" (Luke 17:5) until doubt is gone, and absolute trust claims the promised blessings as its very own.
Thinking of all that Paul went through reminded me of God's peace and assurance no matter what our circumstances. "Lord, forgive me for my selfish prayers. Please increase my faith and help me to trust You completely." I am once again reminded what Jesus meant when He said, "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:30)
Addendum (10/12/99): Yesterday evening, our house was shown again. I had been online so we didn't get the call from the real estate office. Before we knew it, people were in our home! We were completely unprepared! We asked for a few minutes to pick up quickly. The woman looking at the house asked me where the closest Christian school was. I named a couple of schools but explained we homeschooled. She told me that she had homeschooled (she had four children, ages preschool to elementary) and the rest of her family homeschooled, but that she was burned out. Since that meeting, I have been praying for this sister in Christ, for grace to make it through her move and transition (they had moved from Texas and were living in an apartment), direction for their home buying and education choices, and provision of supportive fellowship in her new home. Please take a moment to prayer for her, too! Thank you!
