We Are Still Learning

When I read a book I like to read the front cover, the back cover, the copyright date, the dedications, the acknowledgements, the table of contents, the introduction, the foreword, the preface, the prologue, the postscript, the appendix, the index, and everything in between. I find some of the most wonderful quotes in these "extra" sections of a book.

This morning I found a gem in the "Postscript" to Barbara Smith's Teach Me Lord That I May Teach... (or what we learned thinking we were homeschooling the kids.) ...

We hope we have not overlooked or added any words telling you what we have learned. We have learned Grace and Mercy in our experiences. We are learning from the essential duo: Humility and Gratitude - which is the underpinning of Kindness and Self-Control. We continue to learn Repentence, without which we could not infuse Patience into all we do and say. In our expectations, we have learned not to neglect Faith and Joy. Nor to forget to insert Hope and Joy in the Lord into all our "operating instructions!"

As teachers of our children, we can sometimes forget or ignore that we are also students, that we are still learning each and every day. Think of all that you have to learn. Think of all that the Lord is trying to teach you. It can boggle our minds and reveal again the awesomeness of the Lord our God.

Each day we awake with a new chance for learning to be patient with our children, for learning to look for the joy in teaching, for learning to have hope in the Lord's direction for our homeschool, for learning so many, many things!! Barbara's prayer of hope from the quote above can also be a prayer of thanksgiving and hope for homeschool parents as we face each and every day of teaching and learning.

Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. - Psalm 25:4

I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes. - Psalm 119:26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. - John 14:26

and great shall be the peace of thy children."
