Quotes to Ponder
Walk As Children of Light
Recently, an old trap was sprung on me and with it came overwhelming feelings of bitterness and anger. As tears streamed down my face, I asked a friend to pray for me. I knew this was a tough, deep battle. I was crying because I had been hurt by others. I was also crying because I was filled with bitterness and anger and I couldn't seem to stop these destructive feelings.
Bitterness is deadly. It leads to other sins like resentment, anger, hatred, arrogance. Hebrews 12:15 says, Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.
I have been reading The Applause of Heaven by Max Lucado. The chapter on mercy starts by describing bitterness ...
Someone doesn't meet your expectations. Promises go unfulfilled. Verbal pistols are drawn, and a round of words is fired. The result? A collision of the hull of your heart against the reef of someone's actions. Precious energy escapes, coating the surface of your soul with the deadly film of resentment. A black blanket of bitterness darkens your world, dims your sight, sours your outlook, and suffocates your joy.
At the end of this chapter Mr. Lucado writes about mercy and grace. What a contrast from the above ...
The merciful, says Jesus, are shown mercy. They witness grace. They are blessed because they are testimonies to a greater goodness. Forgiving others allows us to see how God has forgiven us. The dynamic of giving grace is the key to understanding grace, for it is when we forgive others that we begin to feel what God feels.
Here are just a few of the Scriptures that a friend sent me while I struggled. These really help to put our eyes back on Jesus, to walk as children of light!!
Better is a little with righteousness, Than vast revenues without justice. - Proverbs 16:8
But my eyes are upon You, O GOD the Lord; In You I take refuge; Do not leave my soul destitute. Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, And from the traps of the workers of iniquity. - Psalm 141:8-9
Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day; For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off. Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way. - Proverbs 23:17-19
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. - Ephesians 5:8-10

The Applause of Heaven
by Max Lucado
In this book, Mr. Lucado writes about the Beatitudes. I was drawn to this book because of its beautiful cover. It uses a classic landscape painting of Western art. In the painting, a family of deer is standing at the edge of a stream. Only one deer is drinking from the water. On the back cover, Psalm 42:1 is written ... As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. One of my favorite verses! - Kathy Ridpath
"And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord;
and great shall be the peace of thy children."
