The Best Laid Plans ...

It was not the day that I had planned. My plans included starting our science study, decluttering the attic, putting up bookshelves to get books off the floor, and baking a pie. What actually happened was phone calls that distracted us first thing in the morning, extra time needed on a grammar lesson, my daughter being accidentally hit in the face which produced lots of blood and a cut & swollen cheek (interjecting a praise to God for His protection of this child in this situation!!), and ... need I go on? It was not the day that I had planned.

In her wonderful book, Keep a Quiet Heart, Elisabeth Elliot shares from biographies of great Christians "to give us perspective and help us to keep spiritual balanace" ...

[F]rom an out-of-print book, The Life and Letters of Janet Erskine Stuart. Says one who was her assistant for some years, "She delighted in seeing her plan upset by unexpected events, saying that it gave her great comfort, and that she looked on such things as an assurance that God was watching over her stewardship, was securing the accomplishment of His will, and working out His own designs. Whether she traced the secondary causes to the prayer of a child, to the imperfection of an individual, to obstacles arising from misunderstandings, or to interference of outside agencies, she was joyfully and graciously ready to recognize the indication of God's ruling hand, and to allow herself to be guided by it."

By the end of that day the science curriculum was undisturbed, the attic was still shut tight, the books were still on the floor and the pie was just a thought for tomorrow's menu. At the same time, friends were coming to visit, plans to go camping were being made, a new grammar concept had been learned, rules for playing safely were appreciated more fully, and thankful prayers for the Lord's protection and care were being lifted up.

As my daughter snuggled close against me, I checked her cut & swollen cheek. She reached up to hug me and give me a kiss. It had been a good day. Thank You, Lord!

Keep a Quiet Heart
by Elisabeth Elliot
Once again, Mrs. Elliot writes with wisdom and experience, convicting and teaching at the same time. She is not out to make you "feel good" about yourself, but, instead, she urges you to grow, to mature, in your walk with the Lord. I recommend using this wonderful book as a daily devotional. - Kathy Ridpath
