Stretching Hope

My daughter had been whining and complaining a lot. She always got stuck doing the dirtiest dishes, folding the most clothes, picking up the most toys, cleaning her room which somehow got so messy by itself and so on and so forth. Laughter helped turned things around. A good dose of humor tore down the strong, hard walls that were being built up between the two of us. The walls that had prevented us from reaching out to each other, encouraging one another, praying for one another, and loving each other.

I agree with Margaret Jensen when she writes, "Humor is one of life's nails in a sure place." In her book, A Nail in a Sure Place, she writes more on laughter ...

Just as there is beauty all around us, so there is the joy of laughter from humor in everyday living. Tears can wash the eyes of faith so we can see God in the impossible. Laughter makes hope stretch like elastic to help us wait for the answers.

Janice used to say, "I can always tell when Mother is 'fighting the fight of faith.' Her letters are hilarious."

Yes, sometimes we laugh together to keep from crying. God's Word speaks of joy: "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing" (Romans 15:13). God knows that happiness depends on happenings, but the joy of the Lord is of the spirit.

God fills us with all joy, while we are in the believing stage so we can wait for the seeing. If you can believe, you'll see the glory of the Lord.

Foolish jesting and idle conversation are not the marking of a Spirit-filled life; but the joy of the Lord rises like a fountain and takes away the cutting edge of the cares of this world.

A friend and I shared stories from recent events in our lives. Some of these stories could have been traps of bitterness and irritations. We laughed recounting one moment which had been so embarassing to me and other moments when we had been confronted or insulted. We weren't making fun of the people, just seeing the humor in the situations. I understand what Mrs. Jensen means by "laughter makes hope stretch like elastic to help us wait for the answers."

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. - Psalms 126:2

A Nail In A Sure Place
by Margaret Jensen
A book of heart-warming and inspiring stories, illustrating the power of God's love and faithfulness. Jensen tells of those who have inspired her with their endurance, godliness, and unsung commitment to others. She reminds us all to be faithful in the little things, and to always be ready to be a yielded vessel of the Lord to be used by Him...to encourage people and be that "nail in a sure place" that someone can hang onto while they establish their "sure footing" in the Lord.
